Adam, setting 'hide_mode' to 1 won’t disable auto-hide, it will actually
activate it. To fully disable autohide, you need to set 'hide_mode' to
0, and you also need to set the 'use_strut' to true:
gconftool-2 --type=int --set /desktop/unity-2d/launcher/hide_mode 0
gconftool-2 --type=bool --set /desktop/unity-2d/launcher/use_strut true
