Solved. Settings inside NVIDIA section of system prefs. not in monitor settings. Re-boot also needed, as was setting system for "Twinview" to get one workspace. Audio seems to be dead on all other outputs if HDMI used, so just using speakers in monitor for now, rather than mess with it any more.
