David, thank you for your quick answer. The Analog Mix was at the highest value so I have managed to put it to a minimum value. The problem was that I couldn't mute it (there is no such an option in alsamixer, or I was just unable to find it). To answer your questions: 1) definitely the one working is the Rear Mic - and that one is selected. 2) I played with those as well - no effect.
However - I was not able to do a full test because I am doing all these operations remotely from US.
