This bug is still present in natty, clean installation. My simple TeX file above (test1.tex) still doesn't work.
I downloaded the cvs version of auctex (2011-05-09): cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonym...@cvs.savannah.gnu.org:/sources/auctex co auctex cd auctex ./autogen.sh ./configure --prefix=/usr/local make sudo make install and it seems to solve the issue.
