I guess the problem is due to lack of dithering support in the driver -
unlike nv driver which has an option to enable dithering.

I looked into documentation of `geeqie`, since it was also exhibiting the
banding issue.
Per /usr/share/doc/geeqie/html/GuideOptionsHidden.html

dither_quality: Set the quality when dithering images on displays with a
limited color pallet:
0: No dithering 1: Normal 2: Best

So, in ~/.config/geeqie/geeqierc.xml

I changed "1" to "2":
image.dither_quality = "2"

and that resolves the banding issue in geeqie.

So, are there any hopes of getting a dithering option for the neomagic
driver, similar to nv driver?
