Noam Lewis, this issue is unreproducible using LibreOffice Writer via
the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/244353/+attachment/313739/+files/test.odt
&& unoconv --listener && unoconv -f pdf test.odt

wait a few seconds then type:

acroread test.odt

looks as it does in Writer. Does this work for you?
