I found out that plugging the camera directly into an USB port, not to a
USB hub, solves the problem. Now the camera works as expected. Working
plugged in from a hub seems to have stopped working at some kernel
update (probably with the 2.6.38 kernel as this started happening with
Natty).

So I will close this bug and and open one on the Hub just in case it is
useful for the kernel developers.
