Well, what you described is not standard upgrade procedure, as per Ubuntu. I did upgrade from 8.10, following Ubuntu directive, going to -> 9.04 ; reboot -> 9.10 ; reboot -> 10.04 LTS with my system on RAID1 and GRUB on both disks. That was a year ago and it is still working. Hope this can be of any help.
