It of course depends on which network indicator you mean (I'm guessing
nm-applet unless you installed indicator-network separately), but
regardless, whether a network is secured is shown by a small padlock at
the bottom left corner of icons (though it may be different in other
themes, and show elsewhere over the icon).
Marking as invalid: provided your theme provides the right *-secure
icons, there should be a padlock on the image or some other indication
that a network is secured, unless it's an ad-hoc network in which case
it will just show as that.
