FWIW, on my oneiric 3.0rc6 kernel, there's still no sound without 
running the hda-verb command (or the hda_analyzer equivalent I guess).

I've added David's ppa repo, so I see the package gets updated 
automatically from time to time, so I'll assume I'm also running the 
latest fixes, whatever that is...
