This should be fixed in cups 1.4.7-1ubuntu1. > Could it be that the /var/run symlink is setup in the postinst > script? No, it's set up in an upstart job, so you need to reboot after the upgrade. But still, you shouldn't do that with half of the packages being unconfigured due to the aborted update. So I suggest to sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade (or using update-manager) again to clean up first.
