All scripts in these runlevels are called with "stop" as the argument, the K vs. S is only used for ordering. At this point I'm all out of guesses as to what's going on with your system. Could you please edit /etc/init.d/umountroot to add these two lines as the first non-comments in the file: set -x exec > /shutdown.log 2>&1 then reboot, and attach the resulting /shutdown.log file (if any)?
