A workaround has been found: unload the wired ethernet module before
entering the WPA password.  Works for me.

  sudo rmmod atl1c

This seems crazy: likely a bug in the Attansic driver.  Part of the
kernel.  But I cannot figure out what to add as a "project" at the top
of this report.
