Another test... I added a background image to grub2, succesfully: fireworks.jpg
(transformed the xpm included in the package).
But now, after the two error messages ("cannot read linux header" and "you need
to load kernel first") I obtain, after pressing a key and before returning to
the menu, another error message: "caricamento delle voci predefinite e di
ripiego non riuscito". Which might be approximately translated to English as
follows: "impossible to load defaults". I hope that this can help debugging...
