The update manager grays those options out just to be safe. It is not an error in the program. If there are 'conflicts' between packages that need to be installed, the update-manager will gray them out so you cannot install them. Also, if some dependencies cannot be satisfied due to a problematic mirror, they will also be un-selectable. Many times all you need to do in this case is wait a few hours for the mirrors to be updated. This is expected behavior. And yes you are correct, it seems to be caused by your PPA's on the system.
