Maybe the user hit the super key and let go of it before hitting the second key (w?) to view windows. This will activate the search box, which will prevent "expose" from working. If your window is full screen and opaque, you won't notice this. You can see this happening by setting your terminals opacity to 50%. Do you see your expose key (w?) being entered into the search box?
