I also have this problem. I had the same results as Skou:
$ dmesg | grep link
[ 21.037301] audit: initializing netlink socket (disabled)
but I'd like to note, additionally, that removing and replugging the
ethernet cable did not change the output of dmesg | grep link; it was as
above both before and after I did that.
This bug is new on Feisty for me, but I was not using network-manager on
this machine with Edgy.
