Actually this cries for reopening bug 652852. I'm now thinking the only way to handle this is to somehow restore the option to "use largest continuous free space".
Easy to say, but I'm sure it's a nightmare to implement :^( Time to get out the dartboard again. I'm honestly not just trying to be difficult.
