I finally found a fix (that perfectly worked for me). It's quite simple: 1. Added 'options snd-hda-intel model=auto' to alsa-base.conf 2. Installed pavucontrol (Pulse Audio Control) and set mic input balance to the left channel 3. Updated to the latest alsa drivers as described in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules.
