I don't think it's gone. I'm running the released Ubuntu 7.04, a Matrox
P650 with dual monitors and <i>matroxdriver_mtx-x86_32-1.4.4.8</i> from
<a href=http://www.tuxx-home.at>tuxx-home.at</a>. If I have "splash" on
the <i>kernel</i> line, I do get to see the logo, the progress bar and
messages in blue (I don't have any "quiet" options), the gdm logon
screen looks good, but after that the GUI is messed up. Lots of stripes,
garbled mouse and funny refresh actions wherever the mouse goes.
