Please reopen this. I had the nvidia driver from the vendor running before my feisty upgrade. I removed it and installed nvidia-glx, and now I have the version conflict described above. I've scrubbed the file system several times for wayward leftover files ... as far as I can tell, the only files I've got are the files from the package, yet it fails to start with that error.
