After installing Oneiric Alpha 3, i386, and testing, I cannot reproduce
your error.
Subsequently, there is a segmentation fault in "aptitude" in Alpha 3,
which makes me think that the aptitude package should not be used for
installing software at this time.
As such, and after talking with George Edison (george-edison55), I have
been allowed to change the status of the "StackApplet" part of this bug.
My recommendation is this: run the following to install stackapplet:
sudo apt-get install stackapplet
Note that I have dissected the entire .deb and all packages related to
it. Absolutely none of them, including the dependencies of the
stackapplet package as well as the dependencies of the dependencies,
have python-gnomeapplet, nor gnome-python-desktop, in the packages.
(triple checked all packages involved, all versions from Lucid onwards,
both manual dissection of the control files as well as using
packages.ubuntu.com).
As this cannot be replicated in apt-get which acts in the same manner
generally as aptitude, and as both would return the same issue, the
status of this bug is being changed. If you run apt-get, and get the
same error, I welcome you to reopen the bug as "New".
