As I wrote above it is a matter of both kernel and the opensource AMD driver. Using the fglrx reduces dramatically the power consumption! From my oneiric (linux-kernel-3.0) tests I can see that the power consumption is significantly lower, but still remains higher than maverick or lucid (WITH fglrx)...
