It was a live session from the Kubuntu DVD. I've since determined that
bcmwl-kernel-source wasn't available (fixed in the Kubuntu seeds), but
it wasn't at all clear what was happening at the time.

I'm not sure what's supposed to happen in a case like this, but the
current user experience isn't very satisfying IMO.
