I've tried Ubuntu Dapper, Edgy and Feisty on my dc7700p, and nothing really 
works. The OS eventually installs, but I get the following:
* the OS takes up to 15 minutes to boot
* weird graphics artifacts during boot
* the primary NIC fails to load
* load messages that indicate 'load essential drivers    FAIL'
* messages that the HAL has failed to load (!)
* both CPUs are at full capacity most of the time, so the systems is dog-slow 
(hence 15-minute boot time)
* opening applications eventually times out (possibly CPU too busy)

In general, the system is not really usable.

I have tried a few kernel boot options, mentioned below, but nothing
works...
