Hi iMac and thanks for testing. Perhaps you could get some clue from
pavucontrol?
Install the pavucontrol application and start it. When you have a non-working
application trying to play back sound, go to the playback tab in pavucontrol
and make sure all settings are ok for the application (output routing, not
muted, etc). You could also compare with running the (working) speaker test and
see if there is any difference in pavucontrol when you're running the speaker
test.
