I started the day by installing pavucontrol and plugging in a headset (something else I wasn't sure I'd tested). Sound appears to be fine not in all respects in all applications.
I toggled back to HDMI out (which I have been successfully using recently) and purged pavucontrol, rebooted and everything is still fine. All I can assume is perhaps one of the recent 0.99.3-0ubuntu[X] updated solved a problem for me, or the headset re-plug helped with a routing issue (I wish I'd tested first).
