Further to my previous: I used the switcher applet and I believe used effects -
I am unable to check now because I get an error
reading "composite extension not available"

I right clicked the workspace applet,then preferences and increased the number
of workspaces. However, having now just rebooted I found the workspaces reduced
to 2 but was able to change without problem; I have now increased again to 4
and everything appears to be OK.
This has happened before and I put it down to my using the restricted driver
facility, which also causes me to lose sound, I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
card.

- How did you set the number of workspaces ?
- How are you trying to switch between workspaces (shortcuts, switcher
applet)?
- Have you turned the desktop effects on in Prefences -> Desktop Effects ?
