Arf, the bug report expired because I got lazy.

I still have the problem though. PC freezes after the logging screen.
I just redid the test:

I can *always* boot when the power chord is plugged.
I can *rarely* boot when the laptop is on battery. I tried 8 times, only the
6th time I could reach my desktop.

When the PC is frozen, there are slight variations:
- sometimes the mouse cursor is an arrow, sometimes a rolling 'busy' wheel
(that doesn't turn).
- sometimes the wifi led is blinking slowly and steadily (indicating it's
looking for a network?) sometimes it's just on (indicating it found a network
but there's no communication?).

Coming back from suspend / hibernate seems to work fine even on battery.
I tried several times. Although I remember having had a few problems
with that in the last few months.

I also tried to plug the power chord when the laptop is frozen but that
doesn't de-freeze it.
