My computer appears to freeze whenever I start typing in the shell box,
or when I even click on the Applications tab to navigate. I have to
launch any application by command line and be very careful not to try
and file search. My mouse will still move, but I eventually have to hard
reboot my computer.

This is 64-bit Ubuntu 11.10 (latest).
