I'm sorry to report that this bug is still unresolved in Natty.  I'm
using dpkg 1.16.1 and the procedure to reproduce is:

Create a directory structure like this:

debian/
debian/DEBIAN
debian/DEBIAN/control
debian/DEBIAN/postinst
debian/usr/
debian/usr/local/
debian/usr/local/HUGE-FILE-BIGGER-THAN-2GB

Then create the deb with:

fakeroot dpkg-deb --build debian

Which completes without error, however, the resulting deb is corrupted.

ar -t debian.deb
ar: debian.deb: Malformed archive
