I can boot from a LiveCD, and from a usb stick. I had installed ubuntu 10.10, upgraded to 11.04. I had tried to upgrade again to 11.10 but that upgrade crashed with the same error. So I tried installing ubuntu 11.10 from scratch, reformating my system partition but I got the problem described in this bug report.
