So the problem persists even after upgrade to 11.10. :-( Recap: AMD Phenom 8650, Nvidia 260, upgraded from 10.10 32-bit to 11.04 - also affected. Every log out, reboot or shutdown ends with black screen. Only option to reset or CTRL-SysReq REISUB. Later upgraded further to 11.10. Problem still persists. No such problems with 10.10.
