Just seen this again - seems to happen again. Haven't got a particular
behaviour pattern to see it, but I had seen an issue with gnome-shell
and ran Alt-F2 then r to restart gnome-shell - which I have recently
noticed sometimes causes graphic artefacts.

Before this my laptop was running Ubuntu 11.04 with no issues and apart
from this issue 11.10 running Unity/gnome-shell at the moment seems OK.

BTW if anyone else sees this issue it can corrupt gnome settings meaning
I could not log in on gnome-shell, gnome classic, Unity and Unity 2D.
After attempting login the screen shows my backdrop, some black areas,
mouse moving, but keyboard not working even <CTRL>+<ALT>+<F1> or SysRq
sequences (though I couldn't get SysRq sequences to work in 10.04,
10.10, or 11.04 either so I may be doing something wrong) - I think the
processor is running hot after the login (perhaps stuck in some tight
loop). The login screen works OK however. In order to fix this I had
to hold the power button to hard turn off my laptop run back to the
login screen and then press <CTRL>+<ALT>+<F1> before logging in to get
to a terminal, login and then run "unity --reset". Be careful as you
may loose some configuration changes you have made to your desktop.

After the original problem and before resetting unity I did notice some
issues with 1 core running 100% CPU in telepathy-salut and gnome-shell.

Not sure if I'll be able to try the upstream kernel - do you know if
they are stable? I'd probably need to run for a week to say if it was
fixed upstream (though if I repeat the issue then I'll obviously tell
sooner!!) - so it would need to work for me. When I've tried changing
kernel before on Ubuntu I've had some big issues getting X to work
(probably caused by my incompetence and getting incorrect builds of the
nvidia drivers).

If there is any clue to how it might be reproduced then I'll be glad to
give it a go at an appropriate time.
