I have just tried restarting gnome-shell a few times lead to 100% CPU
and couldn't recover from within X. I did <CTRL>+<ALT>+<F1>, login,
tried to kill gnome-shell (which failed to resolve anything the X server
seemed to be toast as the windows were partially visible but not
responsive to anything), then "sudo service lightdm restart" to recover
back to the main login screen.

I hope this helps, but as yet I haven't reproduced the issue - it might
be connected to hibernate or suspend or something I haven't noticed
yet!!!
