Ok, I solved my problem. After login, I started a terminal with ctrl-alt-t. Using "ps ax | grep unity" showed that unity-panel-service wasn't running, and in "ccsm" indeed the unity plugin was disabled. Little surprising but easily fixed! Enabled it, logged out and in again. Now it is started by default again.
But I am still considering it a bug that unity disappeared in the first place. I did NOT disable it manually. Instead, ccsm crashed once and unity-panel-service was gone even across reboots. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873606 Title: Unity GONE!
