I don't know exactly when my /etc/timezone got deleted. My system was last installed around feisty and after that only dist-upgraded (usually around alpha2 to the development version). During natty I don't remember having any problems with the datetime applet (I was using gnome-classic) and after upgrading to oneiric (once again during the development cycle) and switching to unity-2d somewhen my /etc/timezone gone missing. I don't remember anymore if it the problem with the datetime indicator was directly after the dist-upgrade or somewhen later during one of the following upgrades.
