You may be receiving two copies of most mail because of POP accounts: if
emails are left on the server they may, under some cases (such as if you
delete the first), be downloaded again.

GMail supports IMAP. As a workaround, you may wish to change the
settings to IMAP (or better yet, IMAP+); most other parameters do not
need to be changed for GMail, just make sure the server is correctly set
to imap.gmail.com. (and you might need to explicitly enable IMAP in
Google Mail settings)
