Thank you Omer. There seems to be no option in the preferences for the Nautilus file browser GUI (that I could find) to permit this.
Please be so kind as to advise how to retore that setting to enable drive icon display on the desktop, keeping in mind that I varey seldom use the command line interpreter / shell.
