Ben, I have tryed to boot with 2.6.22-3.9 but no luck. Same problem. As far as my knowledge goes I can't find any strange things in the console messages before the drop to initramfs. It stalls with the alert that it can't find my \dev\uuid\[partition code]\ and drops to initramfs. I will try you're advise with the usb-stick trying to get the dmesg for you.
