Yes, CCSM doesn't really work in Ubuntu 11.10 right now, due to the new
version of the gnome-shell and Unity that are present in this release.
The Compiz and CCSM developers are aware of it and there are a number of
bugs open documenting this, so hopefully that will be fixed soon. If you
miss your visual effects and don't like searching from the dash, you can
always downgrade, I've found that compiz and all the effects still work
fine in the 10.4.3, the LTS release. Also, if you want to share your
opinions with the Ubuntu developers regarding this new release (such as
not liking the dash, breaking compiz, etc), you can do so on
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/. For your brightness problem not saving on
reboot, please open another bug report against gnome-power-manager
documenting this problem.
