I'm also experiencing this problem in Ubuntu 11.10. I should also note
I've been running into file system problems w/ bad inodes and the FS
being mounted read-only.
root@enterprise:~$ aptitude clean
[ ERR] Reading package lists
E: Unable to synchronize mmap - msync (5: Input/output error)
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu)
Status: Expired => Incomplete
