Found a workaround. It's not the least bit elegant but it works. Install Xubuntu.
Then: sudo apt-get install unity Then: Install the Edubuntu Desktop from the Software Manager. Once that's done, everything works as advertised. There are probably other ways besides installing Xubuntu.
