Thankyou Lynne for the extra info. My apologies for asking about the root password, It should have clicked when you said you used Synaptic. I asked because I want you to run an "apt-get update" in the terminal. This will print out all the sources/repos apt is using to get your updates and other applications. Since you are having trouble getting to the logs this is a quick way of getting some more info. Please do the following
Open a terminal. At the prompt type: "sudo apt-get update" (without the comments) You should get a long list printed out in the terminal. Copy the list and past it up here. There may be some errors in the /etc/apt/sources.list file causeing the errors your getting.
