I have had this problem too, and I have been doing some digging. . It seems to be caused by the size of the thumbnail bar being set to zero. If you change it to anything else (I have tried 1 and 20 so far) then Ristretto changes it to 73.
You can change it in the settings editor at Settings -> Settings Editor, then ristretto -> window -> thumbnailbar -> size Once you have changed the size then it works as expected.
