I have something similar here.

My lightdm is configured to autologin to an xbmc-standalone session.
When I exit xbmc I expect to end up at the lightdm greeter, instead i
get a black screen and the cross shaped mouse pointer.

Looking i the process list I see two lightdm processes, if i kill the
younger one (higher pid) lightdm wakes up and gives me the greeter. If
I kill the older one both processes dies and I have to run 'sudo start
lightdm' which launches lightdm which in turn launches the xbmc session.
