@Alessandro: The Visual Effects tab doesn't exist anymore since 11.04 .
By saying "stuck in 2D" do you mean to say you're using Unity 2D?
Could you please upload a screenshot of your desktop so that we can find
out whether you're using Unity 2D or 3D? From what I'm guessing, Unity
3D and compiz are running happily on your computer, but you are unaware
of it, and you're thinking that the effects are off, while in fact
they're on by default.
