@Anders: Very helpful, input -- thanks! I'm 99% certain that both Thunderbird and Firefox render their menus with Javascript -- this is how plug-ins / add-ons are able to change the contents of menus -- and this is rather unique when compared to most other Linux apps. So, thanks again for the tip: I think you have indeed help me narrow down a good path to investigate further.
