could you run 'unity --reset' in 'Ubuntu 2D' session and if unity starts
there try to log back into 'Ubuntu' session and let us know if unity
works fine afterwards, further more you could try to login to a guest
session and check if unity works fine for you (maybe create a new user
if that does the trick)
