noise has stopped after a power failure and UPS failure. It is strange that relocating the speakers and cold rebooting the computer did not stop the noise, the noise stopped after a power failure and UPS failure. I can not explain why this had any effect. The external speaker system had a clean power supply and did not make noise on its own. The noise came from the sound card when WIFI was active. Maybe the WIFI reset to a different channel but it stayed on the same channel. Maybe it was the UPS although it was not connected to the computer via USB.
